ONLINE: Story Club Minneapolis

https://www.facebook.com/events/780130045879708/

Story Club Minneapolis is a live monthly storytelling show that USUALLY happens at the Bryant Lake Bowl & Theater. Story Club showcases true, autobiographical stories -- especially stories that are bold, vulnerable, unexpected, and connected to the complexity of our cultural environment. No two Story Club evenings are ever alike, but each month when we wrap up the show, we feel like we’ve witnessed a new, unique little community coming together.

In the wake of the Coronavirus, Story Club Minneapolis has moved our shows into online livestreams via Zoom.us. Because of this, we’re swapping our our open mic section for curated storytellers, which means that, while there won’t be names pulled from a hat, there WILL be FIVE phenomenal narrative artists from the Twin Cities and BEYOND, coming together in one special evening. We think that’s a bright spot in an otherwise trying time!

Story Club’s host and producer is actor/writer Amy Salloway. She’s the creator of the award-winning autobiographical touring solo plays Does This Monologue Make Me Look Fat?, So Kiss Me Already, Herschel Gertz!, and Circumference, as well as the two-person show Entwined. She’s contributed true personal stories to programs on MPR and CBC radio, and has been both a storyteller and story coach for the hit national podcast RISK! Amy teaches memoir and creative writing classes through Minneapolis Community Education, and storytelling workshops for regular people and businesses through The Story Studio. Find out more at Amy’s Facebook page Awkward Moment Productions.

December’s featured performers are Alyssa Merrick, Jamie Brickhouse, Justin Lioi, M.J. Kang, and Alys Ayumi Ogura!

Justin Lioi is a Brooklyn-based storyteller and mens' psychotherapist. A former actor and singer, he moved toward therapy after teaching early childhood music classes and wanting to better understand why families, particularly fathers, do what they do. He enjoys how storytelling gives him opportunities to better understand who he is.

Called “a natural raconteur” by the Washington Post, Jamie Brickhouse is the author of Dangerous When Wet: A Memoir of Booze, Sex, and My Mother. He’s appeared on PBS-TV’s Stories from the Stage, The Moth Podcast, RISK!, The Story Collider, and recorded voice-overs for the legendary cartoon Beavis and Butthead. Jamie tours two award-winning solo shows, Dangerous When Wet, based on his critically-acclaimed memoir, and I Favor My Daddy, based on his forthcoming memoir. A fixture on the New York storytelling circuit, he’s also appeared on stages across the continent. Jamie’s personal essays have been published in the New York Times, Washington Post, Salon, Out, Huffington Post, and POZ. Friend him on Facebook, or follow him on Instagram, Twitter and YouTube @jamiebrickhouse, and visit www.jamiebrickhouse.com.

Alys Ayumi Ogura is a Twin Cities-based dancer/multidisciplinary performing artist. Her theatrical/movement pieces have been shown at the Funny Theater Festival by Raw Sugar, the Ragamala Dance Company’s Ode to Navarathri Festival, and 3 Play curated by Charles Campbell’s Skewed Visions. Other highlights of her choreography work include the Body Cartography Project's Future Interstates series; the Walker Art Center’s 2017 Choreographers’ Evening; 9 X 22 SOLO, curated by Laurie Van Wieren; and Inbox@Art Box Choreographers’ Evening.
Ogura is currently an ensemble member at the April Sellers Dance Collective, and regularly works with Pam Gleason’s MotionArt and Sarah LaRose Holland’s Kinetic Evolutions Dance Company.

M.J. Kang is a playwright, actor, improviser, and director. She will basically do anything creative for money or no money. She's acted opposite Philip Seymour Hoffman, had eight plays produced and told stories to anyone who will listen to them. Generally, she is a well adjusted shy person who enjoys being alone, but has a daughter who loves spending time with her.

Alyssa Merrick lives with her rescue cat in Springfield, Massachusetts. She is a social worker working with children and families involved in the child welfare system. This is her first time telling a story in front of an audience and hopefully not the last.
